There is a common phrase amongst Christians – head knowledge vs. heart knowledge. Head knowledge is studying and understanding Scripture; having the academic knowledge of the Word of God and how it applies to one’s life. Heart knowledge is believing what one does not fully understand.

Sometimes academic theologians who study and understand Scripture have an intellectual grasp on the personality and works of God, but have not experienced a relationship with God. More often, you will find a Christian who has a relationship with God, but has not studied the Scripture and does not begin to grasp the history and depth of God. It is said to live your life as God has ordained, one needs both head and heart knowledge.

studyingI am experiencing something similar in a job I recently started. It is not unlike positions I have had in the past, but it has been a couple of years since I’ve done this particular type of work. My heart is into this new position. I love the depth of the job and new challenges it will bring, but my head needs to catch up. The position requires the re-creation of all forms of communication and marketing, from rebranding, web design, video media, to print brochures and newsletters. Now, in addition to stepping into a new job, I need to rejuvenate my hands-on skills. I’ve pulled out my CS3 books, subscribed to Lynda.com and am dutifully reading many online blogs, but still have that feeling of barely keeping my head above water.

So, do you have any suggestions that will help me learn faster? How do you keep abreast of the ever-changing software, web standard, platforms, and development languages? Help, please! My head really needs to catch up with my heart!
